What Biliary Treatment Costs in South Africa

A mild, early case

Caught early, biliary is often an outpatient problem: consultation, blood smear, an injection of the parasiticide and supportive medication to take home.

Expect roughly R1,200 to R3,000 all in. This is the whole argument for going to the vet on day one rather than day three.

A moderate case needing hospitalisation

Where the red cell count has dropped substantially, your dog needs a drip, repeat blood counts and a day or two of observation.

Expect roughly R4,000 to R9,000, depending on how many days and how much repeat testing is needed.

A severe case needing a transfusion

In advanced biliary the parasite has destroyed enough red cells that oxygen delivery fails. A transfusion becomes necessary, and complications such as kidney injury or the cerebral form can follow.

Expect roughly R8,000 to R20,000. A unit of canine blood alone is R2,500 to R5,000, and severe cases often need more than one.

Why the range is so wide

Biliary is not one disease severity. It is a spectrum that moves fast, and where your dog enters the veterinary system determines almost everything about the cost.

A dog seen on the first quiet day costs a tenth of the same dog seen when the gums have gone pale. Lethargy, loss of appetite and pale gums after tick exposure are worth a same-day visit, not a wait-and-see.

What prevention costs by comparison

Year-round tick control — a monthly chew or spot-on — runs roughly R150 to R350 a month for a medium dog. That is R2,000 to R4,200 a year.

It is not a guarantee, because no product kills every tick before it attaches. But it dramatically reduces the odds, and it is the cheapest insurance available against the single most common serious infectious disease in South African dogs.
