Meows are for you

Adult cats rarely meow at other cats — the behavior is largely developed for humans, and each cat builds a personal vocabulary with their person. You're not imagining that you understand your cat; you two literally invented a language together.

The common entries

Short chirp: greeting. Mid-length rising meow: request (usually food or door service). Long, low: complaint. Rapid-fire multiples: excitement or urgency. Chattering at birds: frustrated hunting excitement. The trill-chirrup is a follow-me from mother-cat vocabulary — often an invitation.

Volume changes matter

A quiet cat becoming talkative — especially loud night yowling in a senior — flags hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, hearing loss or cognitive change; a chatty cat going silent, or a meow turning hoarse, also deserves a check. Baseline changes are the signal.

Excessive demand meowing

Cats meow more when it works. If the 5 a.m. aria earns breakfast, you've confirmed the schedule. Feed and play on routine, reward quiet moments, ignore the concert with saintly consistency — and expect an 'extinction burst' (louder before it fades). Hold the line; it fades.
