When Does a Pet Officially Become a 'Senior'?
The real thresholds
Giant breeds are seniors around 6–7, large breeds 7–8, small dogs closer to 10–11, and cats around 11 (with 'geriatric' from about 15). Size, breed and genetics move the line — a Great Dane and a chihuahua age on completely different clocks.
What changes inside
Metabolism slows, muscle quietly gives way to fat, kidneys and thyroid become the organs to watch, joints stiffen, and senses soften. Most of it is gradual — which is exactly why owners miss it and 'sudden' problems are usually old ones finally visible.
What should change outside
Twice-yearly vet checks with bloodwork instead of annual, weight tracked monthly, diet reviewed for life stage, exercise adjusted (shorter, more often), and home tweaks — traction, ramps, night lights — before they're desperately needed.
The mindset shift
Senior isn't a diagnosis; it's a maintenance schedule. Pets age better than ever with modern care — the milestone is simply the cue to start looking closely while problems are still small and cheap to fix.
