End-of-Life

Who to Tell When Your Pet Dies (and What to Cancel)

Cancel these first

Your vet's upcoming appointment and any reminder on file. Any repeat prescription or chronic medication order. Pet insurance, if you have it. Each of these will otherwise send you a cheerful message in a few weeks, and being ambushed by your dog's name on a reminder SMS is a genuinely hard moment.

Update the microchip

South African microchip registries should be updated so the chip is not attached to a live-animal record. It takes a few minutes online or one phone call, and it prevents a distressing conversation if the number is ever queried later.

Tell the people who will ask

The neighbour, the groomer, the dog walker, the person at the park, the family WhatsApp group. Not because you want to discuss it, but because being asked brightly how the dog is in three weeks is worse than one awkward round of messages now. Do it in the first week while people expect it.

Then stop

There is no further admin. You do not owe anyone an announcement, an explanation or a timeline for how you are coping. Once the practical list is done, the rest of this is yours to handle however you handle it.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
