Why Adoption Fees Exist (and What They Actually Cover)
The math
A typical adoption fee covers sterilization, vaccinations, deworming, microchip and often testing or dental work — veterinary care that would cost several times the fee if purchased separately. Shelters almost always lose money on each animal; fees just narrow the gap.
What 'free' costs
A free online puppy typically arrives unvaccinated, unsterilized, unchipped and unassessed — the missing care lands on your bill within weeks. Free is the most expensive price in pets.
Fees as a filter
A modest fee also screens for basic commitment and deters the worst outcomes (dog fighting rings and resellers troll 'free to good home' ads — a known, ugly reality). It protects the animal as much as it funds the shelter.
Fee-waived events
Shelters sometimes waive fees during overcrowding crises for well-screened adopters — legitimate and lifesaving. The screening stays; only the fee changes. If cost is your barrier, ask: many organizations would rather flex the fee than lose a great home.
