Cremation
Aquamation in South Africa: What It Costs
What you are paying for
Aquamation, also called water cremation or alkaline hydrolysis, uses heated water and an alkali solution to break the body down rather than flame. What comes back is a finer, paler ash than flame cremation produces, and there is generally more of it. The process is gentler on the environment and uses considerably less energy.
The price picture
In South Africa aquamation typically costs the same as private flame cremation or somewhat more, and pricing is weight-based in the same way. The premium, where it exists, comes from scarcity rather than running costs — very few facilities offer it here, so there is little competition to push prices down.
Availability is the real constraint
This is the part people discover late. Aquamation is not widely available in South Africa. There are a small number of facilities, concentrated in the larger centres, and large parts of the country have none within practical reach. If you want it, the question to settle first is whether anyone near you offers it at all.
Transport changes the maths
Where the nearest facility is a few hundred kilometres away, transport can cost more than the process itself. Ask for the all-in figure including collection before deciding, because the quoted cremation price frequently excludes getting your pet there.
Worth asking for
If it matters to you environmentally, ask. Demand is what makes more facilities offer it. But if there is nothing within reach, flame cremation at a good local crematorium is not a lesser choice — it is the practical one, and your pet is treated with the same care either way.
If you need a cremation arranged
Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
