Aquamation in South Africa: The Alternative to Flame Cremation

What it actually is

Aquamation — technically alkaline hydrolysis — uses heated water and alkaline salts to break down the body over several hours, leaving the same bone fragments that flame cremation does. Those fragments are processed into ash and returned exactly as with a conventional cremation. What you receive looks broadly similar, though often lighter in colour and slightly greater in volume.

Availability in South Africa

It is offered by a limited number of providers, mostly in the larger centres, and is not yet available everywhere. If it matters to you, search specifically rather than assuming your nearest crematorium offers it, and be prepared to travel or to pay more for transport.

Cost and environmental case

Expect to pay somewhat more than flame cremation. The environmental argument is the main draw: substantially lower energy use and no direct combustion emissions. For families who chose a low-impact life for other reasons, the consistency matters.
