Phone your nearest 24-hour emergency animal hospital immediately. Every major South African centre has at least one, and your regular vet's voicemail will normally name the practice they refer to after hours. Do not wait until morning with an animal in distress — that is the one situation in this whole subject where waiting genuinely causes harm.

What counts as an emergency

Difficulty breathing, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures that do not stop, a distended hard abdomen with unproductive retching, an inability to urinate, or obvious unmanaged pain. Any of these warrant an immediate call regardless of the hour, and several of them can kill within hours.

What it costs after hours

Emergency consultation fees in South Africa typically run R700–R1,500 before any treatment, and euthanasia at an emergency facility usually falls between R700 and R2,000. Aftercare and cremation are billed separately. It is more than daytime rates and that is normal; the practice is staffed overnight.

Deciding under pressure
