Border Collies: Brilliant, and Usually a Mistake

Border collies are regularly called the most intelligent dog breed and they are also one of the most commonly surrendered by well-meaning owners. Those two facts are connected.

What the intelligence actually means

A border collie was bred to work sheep all day under direction, reading situations and making decisions continuously. That produces a dog that needs a task, not just movement. An unemployed border collie does not relax; it looks for work, and it finds it in herding your children, chasing cars along the fence, spinning, shadow-chasing or dismantling your garden irrigation.

What they need daily

• Physical exercise: one to two hours, but this alone will not do it and can make things worse by building an athlete.
• Mental work: training sessions, scent games, trick work, puzzle feeders. Fifteen focused minutes beats an hour of ball.
• A structured outlet: agility, obedience, herding, flyball or canicross. South Africa has active clubs in most metros.
• Rest. Counterintuitively, many overtired collies need enforced downtime — a crate or a quiet room — because they will not switch off on their own.

The ball trap

Endless ball throwing is the most common mistake. It builds a dog addicted to a repetitive arousal loop, damages joints through hard turns, and does nothing for the thinking part of the brain. Use the ball as a reward within training, not as the whole activity.

Health notes

Hip dysplasia, collie eye anomaly and progressive retinal atrophy are all screenable — ask breeders for results. The MDR1 gene mutation is important: affected dogs react badly to certain common medications including some parasite treatments and sedatives. It is a simple DNA test and every collie owner should know their dog's status and tell their vet.

They are also prone to noise phobia, which in South Africa means fireworks season is a genuine welfare event. Plan for it.

Who they suit

People who want to train a dog as a hobby. Active families who will run, hike or do dog sport. Farms with actual stock. If you want a dog to lie on the couch while you work, this is the wrong breed, and a rescue adult of almost any other type will make you both happier.
