Brushing Your Pet's Teeth: Starting From Scratch
The habit that prevents the most pain
Dental disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats, and daily brushing is the one thing proven to slow it. It sounds ambitious, but built patiently it becomes a 30-second routine your pet tolerates and even enjoys.
Build it in tiny steps
Spend the first few days just letting your pet lick a little pet toothpaste off your finger — never human toothpaste, which is toxic to them. Then touch the paste to the gums, then introduce a soft finger brush or pet toothbrush. Move at your pet's pace over a week or two.
Technique that reaches what matters
Focus on the outer surfaces of the upper teeth, especially the big cheek teeth where tartar builds. Angle the brush toward the gumline in small circles. You don't need to open the mouth wide or reach the inner surfaces — the tongue keeps those cleaner.
Keep it positive, keep it short
End every session with praise or a treat so the toothbrush predicts good things. Chews, dental diets and water additives help between brushings but don't replace them. A minute a day now saves your pet from painful extractions later.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
