Start with the SPCA

The SPCA operates clinics across South Africa and offers euthanasia at low or no cost for people who genuinely cannot pay. Phone your nearest branch and be straightforward about your circumstances — this is a service they exist to provide and staff are not there to shame you for asking. Availability and criteria vary by branch.

Other welfare organisations

Depending on your area, organisations such as CLAW, Mdzananda, the AACL and various local animal welfare groups run subsidised veterinary services in under-served communities. Many operate mobile clinics on set days. Phone before travelling, as schedules change.

Talk to your own vet first

A great many South African vets will quietly reduce or waive a euthanasia fee for a long-standing client in real difficulty, or allow you to pay in instalments. They will almost never offer this unprompted, and most of them are asked far less often than they would be willing to help. It costs nothing to ask honestly.

What not to do

Do not let a suffering animal continue because you are ashamed of the cost, and do not attempt anything at home. Home methods cause suffering, and in South Africa they can constitute animal cruelty under the Animals Protection Act. Phone the SPCA — that is precisely what they are for.
