Cataracts in Dogs and Cats: Cloudy Eyes Explained

Cataract or just aging?

Many older dogs develop a bluish haze (nuclear sclerosis) that looks dramatic but barely affects vision. A true cataract turns the lens white and opaque and does block sight. Your vet can tell the difference in one exam.

Common causes

Genetics in many breeds, aging — and importantly, diabetes: most diabetic dogs develop cataracts, sometimes within months of diagnosis. A suddenly cloudy eye in a middle-aged dog is a reason to test blood sugar.

Living with low vision

Pets adapt remarkably: keep furniture layouts constant, use scent and texture cues (rugs marking doorways), talk as you approach, and keep stairs gated. Most blind pets live joyful, confident lives on their mental map.

Surgery exists and works

Veterinary ophthalmologists remove cataracts much as human surgeons do, with high success in good candidates. It's an investment, and untreated cataracts can cause painful complications like glaucoma — so even if surgery isn't your path, periodic monitoring matters.
