CBD for Pets: Hype, Hope, and What the Science Actually Says

What the evidence shows

The most promising research involves CBD for arthritis pain in dogs, where some placebo-controlled studies found modest improvement, and early work on seizure frequency alongside normal medication. For anxiety, evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests.

What to be careful about

CBD can raise certain liver values and interacts with some medications. THC is toxic to pets — never share human edibles or high-THC products. And because supplements are barely regulated, independent testing has found wild inaccuracies in label claims.

If you want to try it

Talk to your vet first (they can discuss it, even where they can't prescribe), choose products with a Certificate of Analysis from an independent lab, start low, and change nothing else at the same time so you can honestly judge the effect.

Not a substitute

CBD is not pain control for surgery, not a seizure treatment on its own, and not a fix for untreated anxiety. Think of it as a possible supplement to real veterinary care — never a replacement for it.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
