Chihuahuas frequently reach 15–18 years, which means many owners say goodbye to a dog they have had for a substantial part of their adult life. Heart disease — particularly mitral valve degeneration — and dental disease dominate the final years. A chronic cough in an old chihuahua is a heart conversation, not a throat one.

Cremation costs

At 1.5–3kg, a chihuahua is the smallest and cheapest cremation bracket in South Africa. Individual cremation with ashes returned typically runs R1,100–R1,800; communal R400–R800. Home collection adds R250–R500, which can exceed the cremation cost itself if you are far out.

Very small ash volumes

A tiny dog returns a small amount of ash — sometimes only half a cup. This is normal and is a function of bone mass. Some families choose to have a portion set into jewellery precisely because the volume is manageable; ask your crematorium whether they offer a split, and expect a small extra charge.
