Burial

Free if done at home, and legal in South Africa on property you own provided the animal did not die of a notifiable disease. Needs 60cm of depth minimum, more in sandy soil, away from boreholes and water sources. Immediate, physical, and a place you can visit. Not permitted on rented property without consent, and often restricted in complexes and estates.

The factor people underweight

Permanence. South Africans move house often. Families who buried a pet in a garden they later sold report it as the single most common regret in this entire subject — the grave is still there and it now belongs to strangers. If there is any chance you will move, that is the strongest argument for cremation.

There is no more respectful option

Neither choice honours an animal more than the other, and your pet experiences neither. This is entirely about what will sit right with you in five years. If you genuinely cannot decide, cremation keeps more options open.
