Choosing the Right Breed (or Mix) for Your Actual Life
Audit your real week
Hours away from home, actual exercise you'll do in bad weather, tolerance for hair, noise and drool, your home size, kids' ages, budget. The dog experiences your real Tuesday, not your aspirational Saturday.
Energy is the big one
Working breeds (collies, shepherds, huskies, pointers) without jobs invent hobbies like demolition and escape. If your honest exercise budget is a daily stroll, a greyhound, senior rescue or companion breed will make you both happier than a border collie ever could.
Look past the coat
Research breed health honestly — flat faces and breathing, giant breeds and lifespan, dachshund backs — and budget accordingly. For mixes, meet the individual dog; for purebreds, meet the parents. Temperament is partly heritable and entirely worth vetting.
The unfashionable truth
The best predictor of a great match isn't breed at all — it's an adult dog whose actual personality you can meet today. If you want certainty, adopt grown. If you want a lottery with puppy breath, at least pick the right ticket pool.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
