No. Cremation happens after death, and there is no awareness, sensation or experience of any kind involved. This question is asked far more often than crematorium staff ever let on, usually in a lowered voice, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an embarrassed one.

Do they know what is happening at euthanasia

No. With sedation first, your pet is deeply asleep before the final injection and unaware of it. What they experience is lying down somewhere warm with the person they trust, and then sleep. Ask for sedation explicitly — it is standard at good practices but not universal.

Do animals know they are dying

Animals do not appear to hold a concept of future death the way people do. What they do register is pain, nausea and the presence of their person. That is why being there matters — not because they understand the moment, but because your presence is the thing that is familiar in it.

Was it too soon, or too late

Almost every owner asks one of these two and they cannot both be true. The honest answer from most vets is that far more animals are brought a week too late than a week too early, because people wait for certainty that never arrives. If you acted while there were still good days, you did it right.
