Dog Behaviour by Life Stage: Puppy to Senior

Puppy and adolescent

Puppies learn who and what is safe during the socialisation window (roughly 3–16 weeks) — the most influential period of their whole lives. Then comes adolescence, from around five months to 18 months, where a once-obedient puppy suddenly ‘forgets’ everything, tests limits and pushes back. This is normal teenage brain development, not defiance, and it’s the stage most dogs are given up in — a shame, because consistency carries you through it.

What these stages need most: gentle exposure, patient repetition, and not giving up when it gets hard.

Adult and senior

By roughly two to three years, most dogs settle into their adult character — calmer, more predictable, easier. This is the long, rewarding plateau. Then, in the senior years, behaviour shifts again: less energy, more sleep, sometimes anxiety or night-time restlessness, and occasionally the confusion of canine cognitive decline — the doggy version of dementia.

A sudden behaviour change in an older dog is often medical, not moody — pain, failing senses or cognitive decline — and worth a vet visit.

Good behaviour isn’t a fixed trait; it’s a moving target that changes as your dog ages. Match your training, exercise and patience to the stage they’re in, and you’ll have a well-adjusted dog at every age.
