Requirements differ by country and change, so work from the destination government’s official rules and start the moment emigration becomes likely.

The money, honestly

Between the vet work, titre testing, approved travel crate, freight and agent fees — plus quarantine where it applies — moving a medium dog to a distant destination commonly costs tens of thousands of rand, often rivalling a human ticket several times over. Budget for it as a real line item in the emigration, and get written quotes early; the number should inform your planning, not ambush it.

The hardest question

For a very old or unwell pet, the honest question is whether a 12-plus-hour flight, crate confinement and possibly quarantine serves the animal or only our hearts. Sometimes the loving answer is rehoming with the family member staying behind — and sometimes, for a pet already near the end, it is choosing a gentle goodbye at home in the country where they lived, rather than a frightening journey in their final months.
