How Long Until You Get Your Pet's Ashes Back?

The usual timeline

Three to ten working days is typical in South Africa from collection to ashes ready. The cremation itself takes only a few hours; almost all of the waiting is logistics — the crematorium's collection run, their scheduling queue, and the return trip to your vet if that is the route.

Why going through the vet is slower

Many practices have a crematorium collection once or twice a week. If your pet is collected on a Tuesday and the run is Thursday, you have lost two days before the process even starts, and the same happens in reverse on the way back. Arranging directly with a crematorium, or through a coordinator, often halves the wait.

When to chase

If you have heard nothing after two weeks, phone. In the great majority of cases the ashes have been sitting at the vet's reception for days and nobody thought to call you. This is common, it is nobody's malice, and one phone call usually resolves it.

The waiting is its own thing

Many families find this stretch surprisingly hard — the house is empty, the funeral has not happened, and there is nothing to do. It is a real and recognised part of pet loss. Setting a date to collect them, rather than waiting to be called, gives the period a shape.
