How Long Is the Puppy Stage? What to Expect and When It Ends

The honest timeline

‘Puppy’ covers more than people expect. Physically, small breeds finish growing by about 10–12 months, medium breeds by around 12–15 months, and large and giant breeds take 18 months to 2 years. But mental maturity lags behind the body — many dogs don’t truly ‘settle’ until two to three years old.

So the answer to ‘when will my puppy calm down?’ is usually later than you hope, and it’s worth the wait.

The stages inside puppyhood

Early puppyhood (to ~4 months) is the socialisation and land-shark biting phase. Then comes adolescence, from around 5 to 18 months — the teenage stage where training seems to evaporate and boundaries get tested. This is the hardest and most misunderstood part, and where consistency matters most. After that, dogs gradually mellow into calm adulthood.

Each stage has different needs for food, exercise and training, so knowing which one you’re in helps enormously.

Getting through it

Puppyhood feels long in the thick of it, especially adolescence. Keep training kind and consistent, keep them exercised in age-appropriate amounts, and remember it’s a phase with an end. The steady adult dog on the other side is worth every chewed shoe.
