Husky and Malamute Goodbyes in the South African Climate
The climate factor
Huskies and malamutes are built for cold and South African summers are hard on them, particularly in Gauteng and the Lowveld. Heat-related illness, chronic skin problems from shaving, and joint disease from carrying weight in heat all appear more often here than in cooler countries. Many South African huskies are also surrendered or rehomed, which complicates their senior years.
Cremation costs
At 20–38kg expect roughly R2,000–R4,000 for individual cremation with ashes returned in South Africa, R800–R1,500 communal, and R350–R750 for home collection.
Summer euthanasia logistics
If your dog dies in a South African summer, a thick-coated large dog holds heat and you have less time before collection than you would in winter. Aim for same-day collection, keep them in the coolest room, and phone early rather than waiting to see.
The coat keepsake
Husky undercoat makes a distinctive keepsake and there is plenty of it. Take a lock from the chest or ruff before collection — with a double coat, take from underneath where the colour is richest.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
