There is no emergency now

This is the hardest thing to hear and the most useful: nothing bad happens if you sit with him for an hour first. There is no clock running, no authority to notify, no legal deadline. Many people feel a panicked urge to do something immediately. You do not have to. Sit with him, phone whoever you need to, and let the first shock pass.

Making him comfortable

When you are ready, wrap him in his own blanket or a towel — this also makes him far easier to move later. Place him somewhere cool: a garage, a tiled floor, the coolest room in the house, away from direct sun. It is normal for the body to release fluids and for the limbs to stiffen within a few hours; both are ordinary and neither means anything is wrong.

How long you have

In a South African winter, a body kept genuinely cool is fine overnight and into the next morning. In summer, or in humid coastal heat, aim for collection the same day. If you are unsure, phone a crematorium and describe the conditions honestly — they deal with this daily and will tell you straight.

Your options

You can arrange cremation directly with a pet crematorium, ask your vet to arrange it, or bury him on your own property, which is legal in South Africa on land you own.
