Pet Birthdays: Celebrating Without Making Your Dog Miserable

Worth asking honestly. A party with eight unfamiliar dogs, music and a hat is a human event that a dog tolerates. If your dog loves crowds, go ahead. If your dog spends parties behind the couch, the kind thing is a long walk somewhere new and a good dinner.

Safe cake

Chocolate, xylitol, raisins and macadamias are all genuinely dangerous. Dog-safe cakes are usually built on banana, peanut butter without xylitol, pumpkin or plain yoghurt. Keep the portion small — a rich novelty meal on top of normal food is the classic route to a vomiting dog and a ruined evening.

Cats and celebrations

Cats do not enjoy parties. A cat birthday, done properly, is a new cardboard box, a fresh sprinkle of catnip, twenty minutes of concentrated play with a wand toy, and everyone else leaving them alone. This is not a lesser celebration; it is the one they would choose.

Watch the decorations

Balloons pop and startle. Ribbon and tinsel are a genuine surgical emergency for cats who swallow them. Candles and wagging tails are a poor combination. Keep decoration light and supervised, or skip it — your pet cannot see the theme.

What they actually remember

None of it. What they experience is a day where you were present, attentive and generous with your time. A long walk somewhere with new smells, an hour of undivided attention, and a good meal will do more for your pet than anything you can buy.
