How Pet Collection Actually Works

Where collection happens

Either from your home or from your vet. Home collection is common in the major centres and less so in smaller towns, where you may need to take your pet to the vet or crematorium yourself. Ask about this early, because it is the detail that most often surprises people.

Who arrives

Usually one or two people in an unmarked or discreetly marked vehicle, with a stretcher or a carrier. They are used to this and will follow your lead — some people want a moment first, others want it done quickly. Say which you are and they will manage it.

Timing

Same day is realistic in cities if you call in the morning. Next day is normal. Over a weekend or public holiday it may be Monday. Nobody will rush you, but heat is a factor in a South African summer, so sooner is better where you have the choice.

What to have ready

Your pet wrapped in a towel or blanket, and a decision on whether that blanket goes with them or comes back to you. If you want a fur clipping or a paw print, ask before collection rather than after — it cannot be done later. Many people regret not asking.

Afterwards

You will usually get a call or message confirming your pet arrived, and again when the ashes are ready. Turnaround is commonly three to ten working days. If you have heard nothing after two weeks, phone and ask; a good crematorium will not mind.
