The honest range

From collection to ashes back is commonly three to ten working days. Cities at the shorter end, smaller towns longer, mostly because of transport rather than the cremation itself, which takes hours not days.

What slows it down

Weekends and public holidays. Facilities that collect from your area only on certain days. Engraving on an urn, which is often done off-site. Larger pets, which take longer and are scheduled differently. And December, when much of the country slows down and turnaround stretches.

What to ask upfront

Ask for the expected date rather than a number of days, so you both mean the same thing. Ask whether engraving is included in that date. Ask how you will be told when the ashes are ready, and get a name and number for someone you can phone.

If it drags

Phone after two weeks. Delays are usually mundane — a courier run missed, an engraver behind — and a call resolves them. You are entitled to ask and no reputable crematorium will treat it as a nuisance.
