Grief
Where to Find Pet Grief Support in South Africa
The grief is not disproportionate
People who have lost a pet often apologise for how hard they are taking it. There is nothing to apologise for. The relationship was daily, physical and uncomplicated in a way most human relationships are not, and it ended. Grief follows attachment, not social ranking.
Disenfranchised grief
There is a term for loss that the people around you do not treat as real: disenfranchised grief. No leave is offered, no card arrives, and someone asks whether you will get another one. The absence of ritual is part of what makes pet loss hard, and knowing it has a name helps some people considerably.
What exists here
Some veterinary practices keep a list of counsellors experienced in pet bereavement, and it is worth asking yours directly. Online pet-loss support groups are active and accessible from anywhere in the country. A general counsellor or psychologist will take this seriously — you do not need a pet-loss specialist to be allowed help.
If it is not lifting
Grief that stays at full intensity for months, stops you working or eating, or brings thoughts of harming yourself needs professional support rather than time. If you are struggling to that degree, SADAG can be reached on 0800 567 567. Asking for help over a pet is not an overreaction.
Making something to hold
Rituals help because they give grief somewhere to go. A paw print, a photograph printed rather than left on a phone, a tree planted, a small box of their collar and tag. It is not sentimentality; it is the marker that our culture does not otherwise provide.
If you need a cremation arranged
Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
