Microchips in South Africa: Why the Registry Matters More Than the Chip

The chip is only a number

A microchip stores nothing but a unique number. It is not a tracker and it has no location function. When a vet or shelter scans it, they get the number and then have to look it up in a database. If that number is not registered to current contact details, the chip is a number attached to nobody.

This is where it fails

An enormous proportion of scanned strays have a chip that leads nowhere — never registered after implantation, or registered to a phone number three numbers ago, or to the breeder rather than the owner. The implantation is the easy part and the part everyone remembers.

Check yours today

Ask your vet to scan your pet and read you the number, then contact the registry it belongs to and confirm the details on file are yours and current. South Africa has several registries, and a chip registered on one is not visible on another, so knowing which one holds your pet's record matters.

Update it when life changes

New phone number, new address, new owner. Every move is a moment where a chip quietly stops working. Put it on the same mental list as changing your address with the bank.

Chip and tag both

A collar tag with your number gets your pet home the same afternoon, from a neighbour, with no scanner involved. The chip is the backup for when the collar comes off. They do different jobs and neither replaces the other.

If you need a cremation arranged

Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
