There is no single 'pet passport'

The phrase is borrowed from the EU scheme and does not describe how it works here. Taking a pet out of South Africa means assembling a set of documents that satisfy both South African export requirements and the import rules of the destination country. The destination sets the hardest conditions.

Start absurdly early

Six months is not over-cautious for countries with strict rules. Rabies titre testing in particular has a required waiting period after vaccination, then laboratory turnaround, and some destinations require a further waiting period after a satisfactory result. Missing the sequence means starting again.

The usual components

An ISO-compliant microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination — order matters, and a chip fitted afterwards invalidates the vaccination record for these purposes. A current rabies vaccination. A blood titre test at an approved laboratory where required. A veterinary health certificate issued within a narrow window before travel. A state veterinary export permit.

Use an agent for hard destinations

For the UK, Australia, New Zealand and similar, a specialist pet relocation agent is usually worth the cost. They know current requirements, which change, and the consequence of an error is your animal in quarantine at your expense.

Ask honestly whether to go

Long-haul air travel is hard on animals, and very old, very young, or brachycephalic pets carry real risk — several airlines refuse flat-faced breeds outright. That conversation with your vet should happen before the paperwork, not after.
