Pet Sitter or Kennel: Choosing What Suits Your Animal
It depends on the animal, not the option
Neither is better in general. Sociable, robust dogs often enjoy a good kennel — company, routine, other dogs. Anxious dogs, elderly dogs, and almost all cats do better at home with a sitter. Cats in particular bond to territory more than to people, and removing them from their space is the stressful part.
Inspect the kennel yourself
Visit unannounced, or at least insist on seeing where the animals actually sleep rather than the reception area. Look for clean water in every run, dry bedding, and dogs who look settled rather than frantic. Ask about the staff-to-dog ratio, the vaccination policy, and what happens if your dog stops eating.
Vetting a sitter
Ask for references and actually call them. Do a paid trial visit while you are still in town. Confirm they carry insurance, agree what happens in a veterinary emergency and who authorises spending, and leave written instructions rather than trusting a conversation.
Cats and the drop-in question
A once-daily drop-in is adequate for many independent cats but not for all. Cats on medication, elderly cats, or cats who are genuinely social need more contact. A cat can hide a serious problem for a full day, which is the argument for twice-daily visits rather than one.
Leave the boring information
Your vet's number and address, your pet's medical conditions and medication, feeding amounts written down, and where their things are. The single most useful thing you can leave is a note on what your pet's normal actually looks like, so someone can tell when it changes.
If you need a cremation arranged
Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
