Pet Urn Options in South Africa: What Is Available and What It Costs
What comes as standard
Most crematoriums include a basic container in the cremation price — usually a simple tin, wooden box or scatter tube. It is entirely adequate, and there is no obligation to upgrade. Some people transfer the ashes later once they have decided what they want, which is a reasonable way to avoid deciding anything in the first week.
The main types
Wooden boxes, often with an engraved plate, are the most common. Ceramic and stoneware urns suit a mantelpiece. Biodegradable urns are made for burial or water and break down over months. Scatter tubes are designed to open cleanly at one end. Photo-frame urns hold the ashes in the base behind a picture.
Getting the size right
Urns are sized by cubic inches, and the working rule is roughly one cubic inch per pound of the animal's healthy body weight. A 20kg dog needs about 45 cubic inches. Buying too small is a common and upsetting mistake — when in doubt, size up, and ask the crematorium what volume to expect.
Keepsakes instead
Not everyone wants an urn on a shelf. Small keepsake pendants holding a pinch of ash, glass pieces with ash worked in, and paw print casts all serve the same purpose. Fur clippings are often more meaningful than ash and cost nothing — ask for them before the cremation, not after.
Before you order
Check the opening mechanism if you ever intend to scatter, confirm delivery time against when the ashes are ready, and ask about engraving turnaround. Grief plus a delayed delivery is a miserable combination.
If you need a cremation arranged
Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
