The Rainbow Bridge: Where It Comes From and Why It Persists
Where it came from
The Rainbow Bridge is a short prose poem written in the 1980s, describing a meadow just short of heaven where pets wait, restored to health, until their person arrives and they cross together. Authorship is genuinely disputed and several people have claimed it. It spread through vet waiting rooms and bereavement cards long before the internet.
Why it works
It does two things well. It removes suffering — the animal is young and whole again — and it makes the separation temporary rather than final. For someone who has just made a euthanasia decision, both of those address the exact thing that hurts most.
If it does nothing for you
Plenty of people find it saccharine, or cannot believe it, and then feel guilty for not being comforted by the thing everyone offers. That is a perfectly ordinary response. The comfort available to you might be a photograph, a walk you always did together, or simply saying out loud that you looked after them well.
Talking to children
It gives children a concrete image, which helps, but be careful how you frame it. A child told their dog is "waiting" may ask when they can go there. Pair it with plain language — the body stopped working, they are not in pain, they are not coming back.
What it is really for
You do not have to believe it literally for it to do its job. It is a way of saying that the relationship mattered and did not simply stop. Most people who find it useful are not making a claim about the afterlife.
If you need a cremation arranged
Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
