Raw Feeding in South Africa: An Honest Look

What the claims are

Advocates report shinier coats, smaller stools, better teeth and more energy. Some of that is real and some is the effect of moving from a poor-quality processed food to any fresh diet. The comparison that matters is raw against a good complete food, not raw against the cheapest bag on the shelf.

What the evidence says

Most veterinary bodies do not recommend raw feeding, primarily on the grounds of bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalance rather than any claim it cannot work. Studies consistently find salmonella and other pathogens in a meaningful proportion of raw pet food samples, which is a household risk as much as a pet one.

The balance problem

A complete diet is not meat. Home-assembled raw diets are frequently short on calcium, or wrong on the calcium to phosphorus ratio, and deficiencies take months to show and are painful to correct — particularly in growing puppies. If you go this route, use a properly formulated commercial raw product or work from a veterinary nutritionist's recipe.

Handling it safely

Treat it like raw chicken for people. Separate board, separate utensils, wash hands and surfaces, thaw in the fridge rather than on the counter, and do not leave it down. Take extra care if the household includes babies, elderly people or anyone immunosuppressed.

Who should not

Pets with pancreatitis, kidney disease or a compromised immune system, and households with vulnerable people. Talk to your vet honestly rather than avoiding the conversation because you expect disapproval — they would far rather help you do it safely.

If you need a cremation arranged

Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
