What actually deters

Research and criminological experience both point the same way: the deterrent is the presence and the noise, not the bite. A barking dog behind a fence changes the calculation for someone choosing between properties.

That means an alert, confident dog of almost any size is a meaningful deterrent, and a trained protection dog is not necessary for the vast majority of households.

The trade-off people get wrong

Buying a dog specifically for aggression and then keeping it as a family pet is where South African households get into difficulty. An anxious, under-socialised, poorly handled large dog is not secure — it is a liability that bites the gardener or a child.

A stable, well-socialised dog that alerts and holds ground is both safer and more effective. Confidence deters; fear bites.

Socialisation is the safety measure

• Expose puppies broadly and positively before sixteen weeks — people of all appearances, uniforms, hats, wheelchairs, bicycles
• Include the people who will regularly be on your property: domestic staff, gardeners, meter readers
• Reward calm alerting and then a settle, rather than escalating barking
• Teach a solid recall and an off switch
• Never encourage a dog to bark at or chase people at the fence — you are training a bite

If you use a trained protection dog

Use a reputable trainer who works with modern methods, and insist on ongoing handler training for you, not just for the dog. A trained dog with an untrained handler is more dangerous, not less.

Understand your liability. Under South African law you can be held responsible for harm your dog causes, and a dog trained to bite raises the stakes considerably.

Be honest about whether your household can maintain the handling discipline for the next ten years.

Practical household measures

Introduce staff properly and repeatedly, with the dog on lead and good things happening. A dog that knows the gardener does not have to guess about him.

Have a safe separation space so the dog can be secured when contractors come. Managing the situation beats testing the dog.

Do not chain a dog as a security measure. It creates frustration-based aggression, and permanent chaining is potentially an offence under the Animals Protection Act.
