Ramps, Rugs and Traction: Keeping an Older Dog Mobile at Home

Flooring first

Tiles and polished concrete are the single biggest obstacle for an arthritic dog. Legs slide, the dog braces, and eventually they stop attempting the journey at all. Runners and rugs laid along the routes they actually use — bed to door, door to water — change more than any supplement.

Ramps over steps

Into the car, onto the couch if they are allowed up, over the one step into the garden. A ramp needs a gentle angle and a non-slip surface; too steep and the dog will refuse it. Introduce it flat on the ground with treats before you raise it, or you will own a ramp your dog walks around.

Raise the bowls

A dog with a stiff neck, shoulders or spine finds floor-level eating genuinely uncomfortable, and some quietly eat less because of it. Raising bowls to about elbow height is cheap and often produces a noticeable improvement in appetite.

Bed choice matters

An orthopaedic foam bed that does not collapse under their weight, placed somewhere warm and out of draughts, and low enough to step onto rather than climb into. Cold and hard surfaces make arthritis measurably worse overnight.

Keep the toenails short

Overgrown nails alter how a dog stands and loads their joints, and they make slipping worse. On an older dog with reduced activity, nails wear down less and need trimming more often than they used to. It is the most overlooked part of senior mobility.
