How to Support a Friend Who Just Lost a Pet
Say the simple true things
'I'm so sorry. Rex was such a good boy. I know how much you loved him.' Use the pet's name — bereaved owners ache to hear it. You cannot fix this and aren't supposed to; witnessing the loss is the gift.
Never say these
'It was just a cat.' 'You can get another one.' 'At least it wasn't a person.' 'Everything happens for a reason.' Each one tells the griever their pain is oversized. If in doubt, 'I'm so sorry' followed by listening beats every clever sentence.
Do something small
Drop off a meal. Send a photo you have of their pet — it will be treasured. A card in the mail lands differently than a text. Weeks later, when the world has moved on, a 'thinking of you and Milo today' message is worth more than flowers on day one.
Handle the practical, gently
Offer specifics, not 'let me know if you need anything': 'Can I return the unopened food to the pet store for you?' 'Want company on your first walk without him?' The empty routines hurt most — a friend who walks beside the emptiness is a friend for life.
