When an Adoption Isn't Working: Help Before Heartbreak
First: is it just decompression?
Most 'this isn't working' feelings hit in weeks two to six — exactly when rescue pets test boundaries as they stop being scared. Accidents, chewing, standoffishness and one dust-up with the resident pet are normal chapters, not verdicts.
Call for backup
Contact the shelter — post-adoption support is their job and they've heard everything. A vet check rules out medical causes of behavior. One session with a qualified positive-reinforcement trainer resolves an astonishing share of 'failing' adoptions.
Fix the setup, not the pet
More exercise, management tools (gates, crates, separate feeding), a predictable routine and realistic expectations rescue most matches. Write down the actual problems — 'he's too much' usually shrinks to two fixable behaviors on paper.
If it truly must end
Return to the shelter or rescue — never online rehoming to strangers, never 'free to good home'. A responsible return with honest notes helps the animal land better next time. Grieve it, learn from the mismatch, and don't let it end your story with animals.
