Aquamation or Flame Cremation: Which to Choose

The actual difference

Flame cremation uses heat, typically for one to three hours depending on size. Aquamation uses heated water with an alkali, over a longer cycle, and does not burn anything. Both leave only bone mineral, which is then processed into what is returned to you.

What comes back

Aquamation ashes are noticeably paler, closer to white, and finer to the touch. There is usually more of them, because nothing is lost to combustion. People who have received both often say the aquamation ashes feel gentler, though that is a personal reaction rather than a technical distinction.

Environmental footprint

Aquamation uses substantially less energy and produces no direct emissions, which is the main reason people seek it out. Flame cremation uses gas or electricity and does emit. If the environmental question is what is driving your decision, aquamation is the meaningfully better option.

Time and availability

Flame cremation is available almost everywhere in South Africa and turnaround is usually a few days. Aquamation is offered at a handful of facilities and may involve waiting, transport, or both. In practice, availability decides this for most people rather than preference.

How to choose

If aquamation is available within reach and the cost works, it is a good choice. If it is not, do not treat flame cremation as a compromise you have been forced into. What matters to almost everyone afterwards is that their pet was handled with care and came home, and both processes deliver that.

If you need a cremation arranged

Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
