The mind-body mismatch

Border collies frequently stay mentally sharp long after their bodies fail. An old collie who still watches the gate, still tracks a ball with their eyes, and still tries to herd the children — but cannot stand without help — presents the hardest version of this decision. The brightness in the eyes makes it feel far too early.

What actually matters

Ask the practical questions rather than the emotional ones. Can they stand and toilet without distress? Are they eating? Are they in pain that medication is no longer controlling? A dog can be alert and still be suffering, and alertness is not the same thing as quality of life.

Cremation costs

At 15–22kg a border collie sits in the medium bracket: roughly R1,800–R2,900 for individual cremation with ashes returned in South Africa, R600–R1,150 communal, plus R300–R650 collection.

Give them a job at the end

Collies do better with structure right to the end. Keeping a routine, a short gentle task, a familiar place to lie where they can watch the household — these matter more to this breed than extra treats or fuss.
