Dog Flu (Canine Influenza): Outbreaks, Signs, and the Vaccine
How it spreads
Canine influenza (H3N2 and H3N8) spreads through coughs, shared bowls, and handler hands — which is why outbreaks explode through boarding facilities, daycares, groomers, and shelters. Most US dogs have no natural immunity.
What it looks like
A soft, wet or dry cough lasting up to weeks, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, and low energy. Most cases are mild, but some dogs develop pneumonia — puppies, seniors, and flat-faced breeds are at higher risk.
If your dog is coughing
Keep them home and away from other dogs, and call your vet before walking into the lobby — clinics often ask flu suspects to wait in the car. Dogs can remain contagious for weeks with H3N2.
The vaccine
A bivalent flu vaccine covers both strains, given as two doses a few weeks apart. Many boarding and daycare facilities now require it. If your dog is social, it's a sensible layer of protection.
