Why weight is everything

Every South African crematorium prices by weight because that is what determines chamber time and fuel. Give an honest estimate rather than an optimistic one when you phone — an underquote discovered on collection day is a conversation nobody wants at that moment. If you genuinely do not know, say roughly and ask them to confirm on arrival.

Individual cremation, ashes returned

Under 10kg: roughly R1,100–R2,000. 10–25kg: R1,800–R3,000. 25–45kg: R2,400–R4,200. Over 45kg: R3,000–R5,500. Gauteng and the Western Cape sit at the upper end of each band; smaller centres are usually cheaper.

Communal cremation, nothing returned

Roughly R400–R2,200 across the same weight range. This is a legitimate and dignified choice, and many families choose it deliberately rather than for cost. If you want ashes back, though, it has to be individual — there is no partial version.

The extras that catch people

Home collection R250–R900 depending on size and distance. Urns beyond the basic included box, R300 upwards. After-hours or weekend surcharges. Paw prints and fur keepsakes, which must be requested before the cremation. Always ask for the total, not the cremation price.
