Pet Loss Grief Support: You Don't Have to Carry It Alone

Your grief is legitimate

Research consistently shows the grief of losing a pet can equal the loss of a human loved one. If people around you don't understand, that's a limit of their experience — not a verdict on your love.

Free hotlines and groups

Several US veterinary schools run pet-loss support hotlines staffed by trained volunteers, including Cornell and Tufts. Many humane societies host free monthly pet-loss support groups, in person and online, where you can talk to people who truly get it.

When to seek counseling

If weeks pass and sleep, appetite, work, or relationships are still suffering — or guilt has become a loop you can't exit — a grief counselor can genuinely help. Many therapists now list pet loss as a specialty.

Small daily anchors

Grief is love with nowhere to go. Give it somewhere: a candle at dinner, a morning walk on their old route, writing them a letter. The ache softens, not because you loved less, but because love learns to live in memory.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
