Planning Ahead: The Conversation to Have Before You Need It

Why it helps

Every family who has planned ahead says the same thing: the day was still terrible, but it was not chaotic. Decisions made calmly at the kitchen table are better than decisions made in a car park with a suffering animal. It takes about twenty minutes and you will not need to think about it again for years.

The four decisions

Home or clinic. Individual cremation, communal, or burial. Who needs to be present, including children. What your ceiling is financially, honestly stated. Write the answers down somewhere findable — a note on your phone is enough — and tell whoever else in the household would need to act.

The numbers to save

Your vet. Your nearest 24-hour emergency animal hospital. A pet crematorium you have actually phoned rather than one you found on the day. Three numbers in your phone, saved on an ordinary afternoon, remove the worst of the scramble.

Talk about the line

The most useful conversation is about what quality of life means in your household. Not eating? Not able to stand? Incontinence? More bad days than good? Agreeing on that while everyone is calm prevents the awful situation where two people who love the same animal disagree about it in a consulting room.

If the day is coming

Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
