Rainy-Day Games: Exercising a Dog Without Leaving the House
Nose beats legs
Scent work tires dogs faster than mileage: hide treats around a room and cue 'find it', scatter kibble in a towel-roll burrito or snuffle mat, or play the shell game with cups. Ten sniffing minutes rival a walk — noses are expensive machinery to run.
Structured indoor games
Stair-free fetch down a hallway, tug with rules (take it, out, repeat), flirt-pole sessions for chasers (on carpet, gentle turns), and 'red light, green light' impulse games. Keep sessions short and end before arousal boils over.
Brain work
Rainy days are trick-training weather: touch, spin, chin rest, put toys in the box, names of toys. Three five-minute sessions sprinkle the day with wins. Puzzle feeders and frozen stuffed toys turn meals into projects.
The calm skill
Weather weeks are also when 'settle on a mat' earns its keep — reward relaxed lying on a designated bed until calmness itself becomes a trained behavior. A dog that can switch off indoors is the real graduation, rain or shine.
If the day is coming
Ease The Paw coordinates in-home pet euthanasia across South Africa — we find and book the vet, arrange the cremation and handle the keepsakes, so you can simply be present. A flat R950 covers the coordination and your keepsake memorial; the vet and cremation are billed separately at their own rates.
