Therapy Dogs in South Africa: What They Do and How to Get Involved

Three different things

A service dog is individually trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability — guiding, alerting, retrieving — and has public access rights. A therapy dog visits hospitals, schools and homes to provide comfort to people who are not their owner, and has no automatic access rights. An emotional support animal provides comfort to its own owner and is not a trained working dog.

What therapy visiting looks like

Volunteer handlers take assessed dogs into frail care facilities, children's wards, special-needs schools and sometimes universities during exams. The visit is usually short, structured, and far more tiring for the dog than it looks.

Whether your dog suits it

Not all friendly dogs do. A therapy dog needs to be genuinely calm around wheelchairs, walking frames, sudden noises, clumsy handling and unfamiliar smells, and to recover quickly when startled. Size does not matter. Enjoying strangers is not enough on its own — the dog has to actively find it easy.

Getting assessed

Several South African organisations run therapy dog programmes with a temperament assessment, a health and vaccination requirement, and a handler induction. Search for a programme in your province and expect the assessment to be genuinely selective; a rejection is usually about fit rather than a fault in your dog.

Watch the dog, not the schedule

Good handlers keep visits short and stop when the dog has had enough. A therapy dog who starts avoiding the car has told you something, and the correct response is fewer visits, not more encouragement.
