Getting Your Pet's Ashes Back: What to Expect

What they actually are

Not ash in the fireplace sense. What comes back is processed bone mineral — coarser and heavier than people expect, closer to coarse sand, usually grey or pale. Aquamation produces a finer, paler result. Nothing about it is unpleasant, but it is worth knowing before you open the container.

How much there is

Roughly proportional to body weight, not to size. A cat produces a small handful. A large dog produces a surprising amount — enough to need a container bigger than most people picture. This catches people out when buying an urn separately.

How they come back

Usually in a sealed plastic bag inside a simple tin, box or scatter tube, often with a certificate and sometimes a paw print if you asked for one. The basic container is included; decorative urns are extra. You can transfer them later at your own pace.

Opening the container

Entirely your choice, and there is no right answer. Some people never open it. Others need to see. If you do open it, do it somewhere still and private rather than in a hurry — it is more affecting than most people anticipate.

What people do with them

Keep them on a shelf. Bury them in the garden. Scatter somewhere they loved. Divide them among the family. Keep a pinch in a keepsake and scatter the rest. There is no schedule for deciding, and leaving the box in a cupboard for two years is a perfectly normal thing to do.

If you need a cremation arranged

Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.
