Who to Call When a Pet Dies in South Africa

People phone the wrong numbers first. Usually the vet, sometimes the municipality, occasionally the SPCA. Then they phone four crematoria and reach voicemail at all of them.

Here is who actually does what.

Nobody official needs to know

Start here, because it removes half the panic. There is no register of pet deaths in South Africa. No municipality needs to be informed, no permit is required, and no vet has to sign anything. If your pet died at home of known causes, the death is entirely a private matter.

The only exception is a suspected notifiable disease such as rabies, in which case phone a vet immediately and do not handle the body.

Pet crematoria — the actual answer

These are the people you need. Most South African pet crematoria collect from your home or your vet, cremate individually or communally, and return ashes within one to two weeks.

Ask for three things on the first call: whether the cremation is fully individual, the price for your pet's weight bracket, and when they can collect.

The difficulty is that many are small operations running collection routes, so the phone goes unanswered outside business hours — which is when most pets die.

Your vet, if your pet died there

If your pet died or was put to sleep at a practice, the practice will offer to arrange cremation through whoever they use. That is usually a decent operator.

You are not obliged to accept. You are entitled to ask which crematorium they use, and you are entitled to have your pet released to a different one. Vets typically add a handling fee, so it is reasonable to ask what portion of the quoted price is theirs.

Nobody will be offended by the question. If they are, that tells you something.

Your vet, if your pet died at home

Some practices will store a body for a day or two, and some will arrange collection on your behalf. Many will not, particularly outside hours.

What a vet cannot do is certify a home death or issue any kind of documentation, because no such document exists.

The SPCA

The SPCA is not a cremation service and should not be your first call for a pet who has died at home. They are stretched, and this is not their function.

Where they genuinely help is when there is no money at all. If you cannot afford any disposal option, phone your local branch and say exactly that. Many branches will assist, and some can arrange a low-cost communal option. Ask plainly; there is no shame in it.

Municipal services

Some municipalities will remove a dead animal from a public road. That is a roads-and-sanitation function and it is not a dignified route for a family pet — you will not get ashes back and you will not know what happened.

It exists as a last resort. Treat it as one.

A coordination service

If it is the middle of the night

Very little can physically happen before morning, and that is fine. Move them somewhere cool, take a lock of fur, and let the arranging wait a few hours. Nothing is being lost by sleeping first.

The only genuine after-hours emergency is a pet who is still alive and suffering. In that case phone your own vet's emergency line or your nearest 24-hour animal hospital, and do it now rather than reading further.
