Cremation for Reptiles, Birds, Rabbits and Small Pets

Almost every South African pet crematorium will cremate a rabbit, a bird, a reptile or a rodent. Very few advertise it, so people assume it is not possible and end up burying a much-loved animal in the garden by default.

It is possible, it is inexpensive, and the ashes come back.

What it costs

Small pets fall into the lowest weight bracket, which for most facilities means R400 to R900 for an individual cremation with ashes returned. That is often less than a communal cremation for a large dog.

Some crematoria have a minimum charge that a 90g hamster does not meaningfully affect. Ask, because a few will do very small animals for less.

How much ash comes back

Less than people expect, and this is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering when you open the container.

A rabbit returns roughly a small handful. A budgie or a hamster may return a teaspoon or two. A tortoise returns more than you would think, because of the shell.

Crematoria generally use a small container or a scatter tube for these rather than a standard urn. If you want something specific, say so at booking.

The practical differences

Very small animals need careful handling in the retort. A well-run facility uses a tray or container to ensure recovery. Ask directly: "How do you make sure you recover the ashes of something this small?" A specific answer is a good sign.

Reptiles are fine. Snakes, lizards, tortoises and terrapins cremate without difficulty. A large tortoise may be priced by weight like a medium dog.

Fish are usually too small to return meaningful ashes. Most families bury or, less romantically, use the garden. There is no shame in either.

Feathers can be kept as a keepsake in the same way fur can, and for a parrot who lived thirty years that matters. Take one before collection.

Rabbits and guinea pigs particularly

These are frequently treated as lesser losses by people around you, and they are not. A house rabbit who lived eight years and came when called was a companion animal in every sense.

You are entitled to the same individual cremation, the same ashes back and the same keepsake as anyone else, and any crematorium that treats the request as unusual is not one to use.

Keepsakes for small pets

Fur works exactly as it does for a cat or dog — a small clipping from the chest or back. For a rabbit or guinea pig there is usually plenty.

For birds, a single small feather. For reptiles, a shed skin if you have one kept, or a scute from a tortoise if one has come loose naturally. Do not remove anything that has not detached on its own.

Burial, as the alternative

For a very small pet, home burial is genuinely reasonable and a lot of families choose it. Go deeper than feels necessary — at least 60cm — away from vegetable beds and water sources, and check your municipal bylaws if you are in a complex or estate.

The thing to consider is whether you might move. People underestimate how hard leaving a grave behind turns out to be.
