Pet Cremation in Howick and Hilton: Costs, Collection and What to Do

If your pet has died in Howick and Hilton, this is what actually happens next, what it costs, and who comes to the house.

Nothing has to happen this minute

There is no clock running and no authority to notify. No vet has to certify a pet who died at home, and no municipality needs to know.

Sit with them as long as you need. When you are ready, wrap them in their own blanket and move them somewhere cool — a garage, a tiled floor, the coolest room in the house. In KwaZulu-Natal that is comfortably fine overnight for most of the year.

Take a small lock of fur from the chest or neck before anything else. It takes ten seconds and it is the only keepsake that cannot be arranged once they have been collected.

What cremation costs in Howick and Hilton

Prices are set by the crematorium, not by us, and the biggest driver is your pet's weight. Typical KwaZulu-Natal ranges in 2026:

Ease The Paw charges a flat R500 on top for arranging everything and the paw print keychain. We take no commission from any crematorium, so we have no reason to route you to an expensive one.

Most families in Howick and Hilton land between R1,700 and R4,000 all in.

Home collection in Howick and Hilton

This is the part nobody explains well. Most of the South African cremation industry is built around veterinary practices, which means the default assumption is that you will drive your pet to a vet yourself — including after hours, and including if they weigh forty kilograms.

You do not have to. Crematoria will collect from a private home, and in Howick and Hilton the Midlands are served from Pietermaritzburg.

Areas we arrange collection for include Howick, Hilton, Merrivale, Nottingham Road and Mooi River.

The one decision that matters

Individual means your pet is cremated alone and their ashes come back to you, usually within one to two weeks. Communal means several pets together, and ashes are not returned.

If you need a cremation arranged

Ease The Paw arranges pet cremation across South Africa. We find the crematorium, book the collection, stay on it until the ashes are back with you, and set a lock of their fur into a paw print keychain in the colour you choose. A flat R500 covers the coordination and the keychain — the crematorium bills you directly at their own rate.

Individual costs more. Communal is a normal, dignified choice made by a great many loving families, and choosing it does not mean you loved them less. If money is tight, say so — we will find the cheapest workable option rather than the most profitable one.

What we do in Howick and Hilton

We are still signing a crematorium partner for Howick and Hilton, but we can coordinate anyway. We source the facility, agree the price on your behalf, book the collection and follow the ashes until they are back with you.

We find the crematorium, agree the price, book the collection, get the individual cremation confirmed in writing, and follow up until the ashes are home. You make no phone calls at all.

The keychain

Included, not sold. A paw print keychain in one of ten colours, holding a small lock of your pet's fur. It usually reaches you within a few days — well before the ashes do, which is the emptiest part of this.

There is no larger package and nothing else to buy.

If your pet is still alive

If they are suffering right now, phone your own vet or your nearest 24-hour animal hospital. That comes before us, always. Ease The Paw does not provide veterinary care of any kind and does not advise on whether it is time.
